The seasoned automotive techs on our West Herr Ford of Amherst service team recommend having your muffler changed every five to seven years. The muffler, a part of the vehicle exhaust system, plays several important, critical roles.

What the Muffler Does

In most vehicles, the muffler attaches to the exhaust pipe, dampening and filtering out loud sounds from engine activity. The muffler does this by channeling engine sound waves and catalyzed gases through a series of interior holes or tubes. When a muffler begins to fail, the sound of engine activity becomes markedly louder and, occasionally, condensation from leaking gases may produce noticeable rust on the muffler or on surrounding components.

How the Exhaust Works With the Muffler

The muffler is a crucial end part in a vehicle’s overall exhaust system. The system’s main job is to collect harmful gases from engine combustion chamber cylinders. This keeps dangerous gases from escaping into the cabin or into the atmosphere. Once collected, the gases become water vapor and carbon dioxide after undergoing change through catalytic converters.
